APNOR
Story
Asia Pacific Network of Refugees (APNOR)
Asia Pacific Network of Refugees (APNOR) is a Australia-based network of refugee-led organizations in the Asia Pacific region working to set the regional agenda for refugee policy that draws on the collective voice of lived experience. We also provide direct and practical support to refugees in countries in our region such as Indonesia and Malaysia, Bangladesh and with displaced people in countries such as Afghanistan.
APNOR’s current Steering Committee consists of 9 refugee-led initiatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Japan, Korea, Iran, New Zealand, and Australia. APNOR is a membership organization and current membership includes 70 Refugee Led initiatives and 200 refugee individuals as members across the region. We are supported by a wide range of pro bono and volunteer efforts – currently, we have 100 active volunteers from office and technical style to program delivery support across the region.
All APNOR’s programs and projects are intended to mitigate the harsh circumstances in which refugees find themselves and to create opportunities to re-establish their lives. Special focus is given to the most vulnerable, especially women, children, older people and those living with disabilities.
Your donation will help us supporting these vital areas of our focus :
-
Women in Afghanistan: since August 2021 when the Taliban took over Afghanistan, we have had a special focus on supporting women in Kabul and areas of displacement in the country. The Taliban are closing schools and marrying girls off to Taliban fighters. Women and girls once again find themselves prisoners of their gender. Many have moved internally and have become homeless and face starvation in addition to fear of persecution. We give direct support to those newly displaced Afghan women and girls who are banned from work and education by Taliban.
-
Education: is a key part of refugee community life, and refugees’ hopes and aspirations. Refugee-led learning centres are often the only path for refugee children to access schooling. We directly contribute to rental and operations costs as well as equipment for five refugee-led learning centres in Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Thai Burma Border and Iran.
-
Advocacy and Refugee Leadership: the main pillar of their advocacy work is to promote meaningful participation by refugees in order to bring system change we need to empower refugees to act as effective leaders. To do this we support refugees and refugee-led organisations to strengthen their capacity through education, professional development, trainings and workshops.
Your donation makes a huge difference. Thank you for your solidarity.
Activity
ASRC Footscray (Asylum Seeker Resource Centre)
The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is both a place and a movement.
As an independent not for profit organisation, we are owned and run by our community. Our programs empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well-being. As a movement, we mobilise and unite communities to create lasting social and policy change for people seeking asylum in Australia.
We assist over 7,000 people seeking asylum each year from our centres in Footscray and Dandenong, Victoria.
